Myanmar (Burma)

Myanmar (formerly Burma ) is situated in Southeast Asia sharing borders with Bangladesh and India in the northwest, China in the northeast, Laos in the east and Thailand in the southeast.

In the 11th century, king Anawrahta founded the First Myanmar Empire. Under Anawrahta, Bagan rose to the height of its glory and greatness. Thanks to his effort, Theravada Buddhism flourishes in the country today. The art and architecture of Bagan is unique and several temples and pagodas of Bagan period still remain until today as an open-air museum, the biggest archaeological site in Southeast Asia.

The Second Myanmar Empire was founded by King Bayintnaung in the middle 16th century. He built the largest and the strongest Empire in Southeast Asia at that time. The glory and greatness of the second Myanmar Empire was recorded not only in Myanmar chronicles but also in foreign's. Sir George Scott paid Bayintnaung the greatest compliment, " Bayintnaung was a great and his exploits surpassed those of King Anawrahta and even of King Alaungmintaya. He not only united Myanmar but extended the Myanmar power to the farthest limit it even had."

The Third Myanmar Empire was founded by King Alaugpaya in 1752. Also he was the founder of the Konbaung Dynasty and successfully united Upper and Lower Myanmar. After he conquered Lower Myanmar, a small town Dagon was renamed Yangon ( anglicized Rangoon ) where the Landmark of Mlyanmar, the Great Shwedagon Pagoda Stands.

Myanmar covers 676, 577 square kilometers ( 261, 228 sq miles ) with a coastline of 2051 km ( 1275 miles ). Myanmar is formed with 7 States and 7 Divisions and made up of over 100 different ethnic groups and the Bamar is the largest group. The majority of the people embrace Theravada Buddhism and there are also Christians, Muslims, Hindus and some animists. Altogether over 100 national races of different inhabitants, traditions, culture and religions of the Union of Myanmar live in harmony with each other.

Myanmar is called ' The Land of Pagodas' for many thousands of olden golden pagodas and religious monuments scatter around the country. And also it is known as ' The Golden Land' as Myanmar is rich in culture and numerous natural resources such as flora and fauna, rivers and lakes, traditional arts and crafts and precious minerals.

Of the many rives, Ayeyarwaddy, Chindwin, Thanlwin and Sittaung rivers are famous and the most famous one is Ayeyarwaddy river running from north to south which is originated form the confluence of the two rivers, Maikha and Malikha in Myitkyina, Kachin State.

Yangon is Myanmar's main domestic and international hub for air, rail and road transportation. It is the largest town and the main gateway to Myanmar with nearly 6 million people. Other cities worth a visit are Mandalay, Bagan, Taunggyi, Myitkyina, Sittwe and a much to see.
